Visa
No visa required
You don't need a visa for a tourist visit, as long as you stay within the limit and meet the conditions below.
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens travel under freedom-of-movement rules with a valid national identity card or passport. The ordinary third-country tourist limit of 90 days in 180 days does not apply in the same way. Longer residence may require registration and compliance with residence conditions.
- Government fees
- No visa fee.

ETIAS / EES
ETIAS is not operational and is not accepting applications. EES records eligible travellers at the border; it is not an advance arrival form.

Onward travel
Recommended
Austria's official guidance doesn't list a purchased ticket as a requirement at the border. For visa applications, the Foreign Ministry (BMEIA) accepts a reservation or booking instead of a paid ticket. Proof of departure and funds can still be checked at the border.
Travel insurance
Recommended
Standard Schengen visa applicants need medical insurance covering at least EUR30,000, including medical repatriation. Travel insurance is recommended for other ordinary tourist visits; a general compulsory requirement for visa-exempt visitors has not been confirmed. Check any conditions specific to your visa or circumstances.
Other information
These conditions are for a regular tourist visit. Where you live, your visa status and the route you take can change what applies to you.
- Short stays share a limit of 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the Schengen area. Your visa or permission can allow less; this is not 90 days in each country.
- For ordinary third-country visitors, the passport generally must have been issued within 10 years and remain valid at least 3 months after planned Schengen departure.
- Border officials may request accommodation, funds and evidence of the purpose of your visit. Residence permits and qualifying EU/EEA family relationships can change the rules.
