Visa required

Before you travel, check what the official route asks for. Which route is open to you depends on your passport and your situation.

A visitor visa is normally required. For air travel only, you may qualify for an eTA if you held a Canadian visitor visa in the past 10 years or hold a US nonimmigrant visa valid on the eTA application day, and you meet the temporary-visit and valid-passport conditions. The US visa need not remain valid on travel day. The eTA costs CAD 7; most decisions arrive within minutes but further checks can take longer. Land or sea arrivals, including cruises, still require a visitor visa unless another exemption applies. Indonesia and Malaysia joined this conditional route on 26 May 2026.

Processing time
Processing time varies by visa office, application completeness and extra screening. Check the current IRCC estimate for your application jurisdiction.
Government fees
The visitor visa costs CAD 100. Biometrics generally cost CAD 85 if required, unless they are reusable or you are exempt. Service charges may apply.

eTA required — conditions apply

eTA

Canada’s eTA is required for eligible travellers arriving by air. It is linked to the passport used for the application and is not a visitor visa or an arrival card.

US lawful permanent residents can be exempt from both a visitor visa and an eTA when travelling with a valid passport and valid green card or equivalent proof. Canadian permanent residents need the appropriate permanent-resident documents and cannot obtain an eTA. Most dual Canadian citizens need a Canadian passport when flying to Canada.

Your existing immigration documents and method of travel can change what you need. Check IRCC’s official instructions before applying. An eTA does not guarantee admission or determine your permitted stay.

Onward travel

Recommended

You must convince the border officer that you will leave Canada and that you have enough money. IRCC doesn't list a prebooked return or onward ticket as a requirement for every visitor, but carry your itinerary and proof of departure.

Travel insurance

Recommended

IRCC advises visitors to obtain health insurance because Canada does not pay their hospital or medical bills. Super Visa applicants have a separate, compulsory insurance requirement.

Other information

These conditions are for a regular tourist visit. Where you live, your visa status and the route you take can change what applies to you.

  • Most visitors are normally admitted for up to six calendar months, with a different period possible at the officer’s discretion. Six calendar months is not always 180 days.
  • Permanent residence, Canadian citizenship, existing visas and specific re-entry routes can change document requirements. A visa or eTA expiry is not your authorized departure date.
  • Ebola border measures apply to travellers who were in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda or South Sudan in the past 21 days. They are assessed on arrival and must follow public health measures, including mandatory quarantine. Foreign nationals who were in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in that period can’t enter Canada or board a flight to Canada. Some exemptions apply. The measures run until 27 November 2026.
