Arrival forms & authorizations

eTA required — conditions apply

eTA

Canada’s eTA is required for eligible travellers arriving by air. It is linked to the passport used for the application and is not a visitor visa or an arrival card.

US lawful permanent residents can be exempt from both a visitor visa and an eTA when travelling with a valid passport and valid green card or equivalent proof. Canadian permanent residents need the appropriate permanent-resident documents and cannot obtain an eTA. Most dual Canadian citizens need a Canadian passport when flying to Canada.

Your existing immigration documents and method of travel can change what you need. Check IRCC’s official instructions before applying. An eTA does not guarantee admission or determine your permitted stay.

Arriving or transiting by air requires an eTA and a valid passport. Visa-exempt travel by land or sea normally needs a passport but no eTA, except on certain boats from Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon. The usual authorized stay is up to 6 calendar months; the border officer determines the duration.

Processing time
Most eTAs are approved within minutes. If needed, instructions for additional documents are sent within 72 hours; a longer review is possible.
Government fees
The eTA for air travel costs CAD 7. There is no eTA fee for qualifying visa-exempt entry by land or sea.

Onward travel

Recommended

You must convince the border officer that you will leave Canada and that you have enough money. IRCC doesn't list a prebooked return or onward ticket as a requirement for every visitor, but carry your itinerary and proof of departure.

Travel insurance

Recommended

IRCC advises visitors to obtain health insurance because Canada does not pay their hospital or medical bills. Super Visa applicants have a separate, compulsory insurance requirement.

Other information

These conditions are for a regular tourist visit. Where you live, your visa status and the route you take can change what applies to you.

  • Most visitors are normally admitted for up to six calendar months, with a different period possible at the officer’s discretion. Six calendar months is not always 180 days.
  • Permanent residence, Canadian citizenship, existing visas and specific re-entry routes can change document requirements. A visa or eTA expiry is not your authorized departure date.
  • Ebola border measures apply to travellers who were in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda or South Sudan in the past 21 days. They are assessed on arrival and must follow public health measures, including mandatory quarantine. Foreign nationals who were in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in that period can’t enter Canada or board a flight to Canada. Some exemptions apply. The measures run until 27 November 2026.
