Before you travel, check what the official route asks for. Which route is open to you depends on your passport and your situation.
For a tourist visit, Mainland residents need an Exit-entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao (EEP) with an appropriate exit endorsement from the relevant Public Security Bureau Office. The limit of stay follows the exit endorsement. Individual visits for sightseeing (Geren Luyou endorsement) are open to Mainland residents from Guangdong Province and 38 cities: Shanghai, Beijing, Nanjing, Suzhou, Wuxi, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Taizhou, Fuzhou, Xiamen, Quanzhou, Tianjin, Chongqing, Chengdu, Jinan, Shenyang, Dalian, Nanchang, Changsha, Nanning, Haikou, Guiyang, Kunming, Shijiazhuang, Zhengzhou, Changchun, Hefei, Wuhan, Xian, Qingdao, Taiyuan, Hohhot, Harbin, Lhasa, Lanzhou, Xining, Yinchuan and Urumqi. Other Mainland residents may come for sightseeing on group tours organised by designated Mainland tour companies, with a group visit (Tuandui Luyou) endorsement, and must arrive and depart together as a group.
PRC passport holders living overseas need an entry permit for a visit.
PRC passport holders in transit through Hong Kong to or from another country or territory may be granted a stay of seven days on each landing without an entry permit, provided they hold valid entry documents for the destination and a confirmed onward booking for the overseas journey. This applies to transit only.
- Processing time
- Overseas entry permit applications normally take four weeks to process. The Hong Kong Immigration Department does not state processing times for the Mainland EEP and exit endorsement.
- Government fees
- Mainland residents: CNY 60 for the EEP and CNY 15 for a single-entry exit endorsement (National Immigration Administration). PRC passport holders living overseas: HK$330 for a single-entry Hong Kong entry permit (Hong Kong Immigration Department).
For China passport holders
- Where to apply

Arrival forms & authorizations
No arrival card required
Hong Kong no longer requires a general arrival or departure card. These cards were abolished on 16 October 2024.
Separate Pre-arrival Registration (PAR) still applies: Indian nationals visiting visa-free generally need it unless exempt, while eligible Taiwan residents have a separate PAR or entry-permit arrangement. Use the relevant Immigration Department service below.
Visa and customs requirements remain separate; the arrival-card exemption does not remove them.
