Visa
No visa required
You don't need a visa for a tourist visit, as long as you stay within the limit and meet the conditions below.
Indonesia is on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan list of visa exemption countries. The exemption applies only to registered ICAO-compliant e-passports.
- Maximum initial stay
- 15 days
- Processing time
- Registration takes 2 working days online through JAVES, or 3 working days on paper through the Japan Visa Application Centre (JVAC), in each case including the day of submission.
- Government fees
- No visa fee. Visa waiver registration is free of charge; paper registration lodged at the Japan Visa Application Centre (JVAC) incurs an administrative fee.
Conditions and exceptions
Indonesian holders of an ICAO-compliant e-passport can visit Japan without a visa for up to 15 days per stay, for short-term purposes such as tourism, business or visiting family or friends, once the passport is registered for the visa waiver before departure. Registration itself is free; paper applications through JVAC carry an administrative fee. Registration is done online through JAVES (Japan Visa Exemption System) by Indonesian citizens living in Indonesia who travel to Japan by air, or on paper through the Japanese diplomatic missions in Indonesia (in Jakarta through the Japan Visa Application Centre), which add a visa waiver sticker to the passport. It is valid for 3 years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, and covers multiple visits.
Holders of a passport that is not an e-passport need a visa. E-passport holders who have not registered before departure are refused entry at the Japanese airport. A new passport or a change of name needs a new registration. A stay of more than 15 days, or travel for employment or other paid work, needs a visa before travel.
With online registration, the Visa Exemption Registration Notice is shown on the traveller's own smartphone or tablet. Screenshots and printouts are not accepted.

Onward travel
Recommended
Japan's official guidance doesn't list a prebooked ticket as a requirement for all tourists. If you apply for a visa, follow your Japanese embassy or consulate's checklist for itinerary and flight documents.
Travel insurance
Recommended
Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly recommends international travel medical insurance. Its guidance doesn't list insurance as a general requirement for tourists, but some visa or entry routes can set their own conditions.
Other information
These conditions are for a regular tourist visit. Where you live, your visa status and the route you take can change what applies to you.
- Some visa exemptions depend on passport subtype, biometrics, registration or an identity number. Read your passport-specific conditions.
- Japan’s eVISA eligibility depends on residence and the application channel, as well as nationality. Existing foreign visas do not establish a general Japanese visa exemption.
- For eVISA entry, show the live visa issuance notice as instructed; screenshots and printouts are not accepted substitutes.
