ETA required — exemptions apply

ETA

The UK ETA is required for eligible visitors travelling without a visitor visa. It is a travel authorization, not an arrival card or a visa.

Since 9 April 2026, an ETA can be used to travel to Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man, as well as the UK. Since 23 April 2026, an ETA is required to travel to them.

British and Irish citizens, holders of an existing UK visa or residence permission, and people travelling on a British overseas territories citizen passport or a British National (Overseas) passport are exempt. Eligible nationals living in Ireland may also be exempt when arriving from Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man with the required residence evidence.

These exemptions do not remove a visa requirement for a visa-required nationality. Use the official ETA guidance to check your documents and route. An ETA does not guarantee admission.

Eligible visitors need an approved ETA before travel unless exempt. Standard tourist visits can be up to six calendar months; this is not a fixed 180-day period. An ETA is normally valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. Existing UK visas or residence permission and certain Irish-resident journeys can provide exemptions; check the arrival-authorization guidance below.

Processing time
Usually within 1 day; allow up to 3 working days and obtain approval before travel.

How to apply for a UK ETA

Last checked:

Onward travel

Recommended

As a Standard Visitor, you must intend to leave the UK and be able to pay for your return or onward journey. The rules don't expressly require a ticket bought in advance.

If you apply for a visitor visa, the supporting-documents guide lists flight bookings (unless you are transiting) among the documents not to send. Carry proof of departure.

Travel insurance

Recommended

Travel insurance is recommended. It isn't a required supporting document for a Standard Visitor visa application.

Healthcare charges for visitors and special visitor purposes have their own rules.

Other information

These conditions are for a regular tourist visit. Where you live, your visa status and the route you take can change what applies to you.

  • Standard visits can be up to six calendar months; this is not a fixed 180-day allowance. Your passport must remain valid throughout the visit.
  • You must be able to finance your visit and return or onward journey. The rules don't expressly require you to buy a ticket in advance.
  • Dual citizenship, existing UK permission and passport subtype can change whether you need an ETA. Each visit is assessed separately.
